WHAT IS A SCHOOL BUS DRIVER?
A school bus driver is a person who smiles in the morning,
smiles in the evening and eats Rolaids in between.
A school bus driver has a good understanding of
human nature and Mother Nature.
A school bus driver has an up-to-date vocabulary.
A school bus driver gives reassuring nods to
anxious moms standing at the bus stops.
A school bus driver gets there when nobody else can,
finds houses that don't exist and children with no names.
School bus drivers have eyes in the back of their heads,
and hear every word, even in sign language.
School bus drivers are immune to noise.
A school bus driver's favorite words
(besides "goodmorning" and "goodnight")
are "sit down".
Sometimes a school bus driver gets tired,
but seldom gets mad, and always,
most faithfully, gets there.

Qualifications to be a
School Bus Driver
You must be at least 21 years of age.
You must not be using insulin.
You must be able to pass random drug tests.
Once you have filled out your application for employment, Sumner County Pupil
Transportation
will send part of it to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI).
The TBI will check you out. This is a Tennessee law which was passed
because:
a) it looks very bad to have a convicted bank robber driving your kids
around.
b) it looks very bad when Channel 5 in Nashville sends around a TV crew to
film the convicted bank robber driving your kids around.
c) it looks very, very bad when 60 Minutes sends around
a TV crew to film Channel 5 filming the convicted bank robber driving your kids
around!
Seriously, it is important to know that the people who drive our school buses
and teach our classes in Tennessee are the right people to do these jobs. Our
children are worth it.
The background check could take as long as 6 weeks. You won't be able
to drive a bus until you pass the background test. However, you'll still
have plenty to do. You can get your Department of Transportation (DOT) physical out of the
way and study for
the Commercial Drivers License (CDL) knowledge test.
In order to obtain a Commercial Drivers License in Tennessee (or anywhere else
in the USA for that matter), you must get a physical and have the physician sign
a United States Department of Transportation (DOT) form: a Medical Examiner's
Certificate.

You will need to study the
Tennessee Commercial Driver License Manual and take a series of four tests which
are given at the Drivers License Station in Gallatin. These tests include:
1) Class B license.
2) Passenger "P" endorsement.
3) School Bus Drivers "S" endorsement.
4) Air Brakes test.
You may take the tests on separate days if you prefer.
When you pass the written
tests, you will receive your temporary Class B Commercial Drivers License.
Next an instructor for Sumner
County Pupil Transportation will teach you to actually drive a school bus.
At the end of the training, the instructor will give you your Tennessee
Commercial Driving License road test. As soon as you pass that, the
Drivers License Station in Gallatin will issue you your permanent Class B CDL
and you'll be ready to drive a school bus.
